 Sunday, July 21th 2024

Today is the big day : we all meet in London, get to know another and start discovering the city !

In the afternoon we started exploring our neighbourhood. We went to a park called Stave Hill ecological park and played a few games to learn each other’s name. We also had a discussion about our common rules for the stay.

At night we went out to try and see foxes. We had been walking about a 2 minutes when we saw a fox next to a bench, about 10 meters away. It was incredible ! Then we kept walking and we split in smaller groups, and some of us got lucky enough to see others.

 Monday, July 22th 2024

In the morning, we transcripted our common rules (they are meant to help us to get along) on a large piece of paper. We also chose English texts to practice reading aloud, in order to improve our vocabulary and pronunciation. Some of us went with Nour to Tesco to buy something to eat.

In the afternoon we went to Green Park and saw Buckingham Palace. Afterwards we went to St James Park to hang out. We did exercices to learn how to introduce ourselves and to talk to foreigners in English.

After that we went for a walk and saw the Horse Guards House, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben.

In the evening, after dinner, we went for a walk to see foxes. Some of us saw dozens ! They’re not very shy.

It was a great day !

 Tuesday, July 23th 2024

After an classical morning ( waking up, breakfast, etc.) we started to work : reading aloud, pinpointing the places where we saw foxes on the map, playing cards together. We also watch the result of our answers to the survey on the computer.

Then we took the underground to Baker Street. After a little walk we arrived to a big and beautiful park called « Regent’s Park ».
It was noon so Emilia and a group of three ( Erell, Emma and Chloé) went shopping for lunch. In the meantime the rest of the group played « werewolf ». When the lunch arrived we were all hungry !

After lunch we started to do the survey on foxes with people sitting in the park. It was funny and we all got at least one answer. Then we went to a neighbourhood called « Camden Town ». We got a little hour on our own to do shopping. Then we wet back home and had dinner.

Emilia asked us to do our program of the rest of the week, so we did. Then some of us went to sleep and the rest of us went outside to see foxes. And finally we all fall into a restorative sleep.

Today it was raining, but nothing too bad. We watch a documentary movie about the « Fox project », a charity that maintains shelters for injured foxes and abandoned kits. We had lunch near the river. In the afternoon, we splited into groups : one did some tourism in the centre of London (Covent Garden and Chinatown), while others visited the Natural history museum. At night we did the usual : fox-sighting !

 Thursday, July 25th 2024

To start the day nicely we woke up and eat a typical English breakfast together. Afterwards we went to Stave Hill ecology park to do a few stretching exercises. Then with Emilia and Rozenn we practiced reading aloud our texts to improve our prononciation.

Rozenn introduced us to statistics and notions such as « average »,« sample »,« data »,« random », etc. These words can be useful for our science project about foxes, because we will be using data and statistics.

At noon we came back to the hostel to eat lunch. We had wraps with vegetables and fruits.

During the afternoon we split into groups of two, same as yesterday.
The first group took the underground to Chinatown, Piccadilly Circus, Regent’s street, Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden. We saw acrobats performing their shows, it was really impressive. We walked around and did some shopping.😊

The second group visited the natural history museum. We looked at the dinosaurs zone, mammals zone, Reptiles zone, birds zone, stones zone ... The building is amazing and looks a little like a Harry Potter set (that pleased Clementine and Juliette a lot !).🇬🇧

After dinner we played a game called « Alibi » based on our « words of the day ». Then some of us decided to go see some foxes , while others decided to stay at the hostel to rest.

This morning we went to Souhwark Park, about 15 minutes from the hostel. We sat on the grass and had a discussion about our favourite animals and our « animal totems » or « patronus ». Then we talked about the ways humans connect to animals, and how then might be misled by inaccurate information.

Then we tried to do as many interviews as possible to have a significant enough sample. After picnic we started our poster. Some did origami foxes, other wrote texts, other drew charts.

We left just after dinner to go to an open air disco party (« Summer by the river ») on Soutbank. But the music was not loud and nobody danced. So we walked a little further and discovered that the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris was broadcasted live on a giant screen. We all ended watching the ceremony and had a great time. Celine Dion’s performance was a really hit among us !

 Saturday, July 27th 2024

This Saturday morning we continued to create the poster about what we did during the week. Later we divided into 2 groups : the 1st group stayed at the hostel to continue the poster and the second went to a laundromat to wash clothes for the second week.

We met in Southwark Park to have lunch. Then we returned to the hostel to finish the poster. The hostel staff liked our poster so much that they proposed to display it on the lobby’s wall.

Later in the afternoon some went to Chinatown while others rested at the hostel. We all met in Leicester square to have dinner in an Chinese restaurant. The dinner was really good but we ate to much !

 Sunday, July 28th 2024

Today started as a sad day : 7 of us were leaving to go back home and we had to say goodbye... Some took a plane, others a train. In the meantime, those who were staying in London went to a Korean shop then to Camden.

But the good news is that Hector and Isidore arrived, as well as Chloe, our new educator that replaces Rozenn during the second week. As usual, after unpacking we went to the park to make acquaintance, discuss our common rules and talk about the project. As we sat there, a fox came out of a bush and strolled along us without fear. It was both beautiful and impressive !

 Monday, July 29th 2024

Today we had breakfast at 8.30 am, then at 9:30 am we went to a small park next to the YHA to hold the daily Forum and prepare the week.

At 10:45 we went to the hostel to do the survey with Hector, Isidore and Chloé. Then we discussed the previous week’s results.

At 11:20 we split the groups into three. Some went for a run with Emily (Hector and Isidore), others went to buy lunch (Emma, Chloé, Kais, Éloi and Erell). Emilia went to Decathlon to buy a new ball for the group, and the last ones stayed at the YHA to work. We ate our picnic along Greenland Dock.

In the afternoon we all went to St Pancras station for Kais’s departure. Afterwards we visited a smal park, Camley street natural park, next to the station. This park was created by the London Wildlife Trust on a former coal depot. They aimed at changing this area’s destination and create a safe place for nature and ecosystems. That’s why there are different areas to illustrate the variety of ecosystems, such as wetland, woodland, meadows and others.

Then we walked along Regent’s Canal to go to Camden. It was really cool despite the heat. Emilia and Chloe left us 45 minutes to walk around the place in small groups. Everyone took advantage of the time to buy souvenirs or just enjoy the atmosphere.

We finally got home just in time for dinner at 7pm. After dinner we had an evening gathering. We added our « words of the day » to the list and played a kind of « noughts and crosses » with the new words. Then some of us went fox-sighting, but we all came home early to sleep !

 Tuesday, July 30th 2024

To start the day, we had breakfast at 8.30 a.m., followed by the forum at 9.30 a.m. We did a short « body percussions »exercice to wake up.

We decided to split the group into two : one group reading aloud (to practise pronunciation) and another group watching and commenting a documentary about rights of nature, then we swaped.

We had a picnic at the hostel between 12.30pm and 1.30pm. The groups were split again in two. Three of us stayed at the hostel to rest, while the other group went to visit the Science Museum, followed by a series of interviews.

In the evening we ate dinner at 7pm, then we changed our habits : we went fox-sighting, and then only we did the « word of the day » and played Pictionary.

 Wednesday, July 31th 2024

Today started as all other days : breakfast, forum, reading practice. Then we split into groups. Some wanted to visit Notting Hill and see its famous colourful houses, then do some surveys in Holland Park. This meant a lot of walking, but they loved it !

Others chose modern art. We went to Graffiti Tunnel, under Waterloo Station railway tracks. This long tunnel is covered in grafittis and murals, and keeps changing as street artists add their creations. We bought « meal deals » at Tesco’s and had picnic near the London Eye. Then we went to the Tate Modern. We didn’t had much time to visit as we had to be back home by 4:00 pm. But is was interesting, and sometimes disturbing.

Before dinner, we gathered to have discuss rights of nature. Four groups prepared four questions : do foxes need protection ? Why do we have laws ? Do animals have rights in France ? Are there places in the word where rights of nature are enacted ? After dinner we played « Alibi » with our « words of the day » then some of us rested while others went fox-sighting.

 Thursday, August 1st 2024

On Thursday, we had breakfast at 8.30 am, then we did the forum, like usual at 9:30. We learned a african-style dance to wake up properly.

In the morning, we decided not to do anything, to rest, because everyone was tired. Some of us wanted to go outside, and take advantage of that to do surveys. The cooking team was composed of Emma, Erelle and Emilie who went out for the grocery shopping. They cooked pasta and eggs. We ate the pasta salad with vegetables at the hostel : everyone was really happy to eat something different !

Then a little group went to Canary Wharf to do surveys and enjoy this modern part of London for two hours. In the end, we did 26 surveys this day ! The others stayed at home to work on the final project : they started to think about the plan and the script.

After the fikka some decided to do some sports around the neighborhood. After this busy afternoon we all gathered for dinner at 7:00 to eat burgers and fries. In the evening, as usual we played a game with our « words of the day ». Today it was « Code Name » : it is a great way to learn new words. Finally, we went on a walk to end the day seeing some foxes and went to bed at 22:00.

 Friday, August 2d 2024

Today we woke up to our usual breakfast.
We then went to a park nearby to play ball, and to prepare our journey.
We started our final project : a video.
While some analyzed the results of the survey, others started shooting the video. We do two taken for text, and after we had the lunch and it was funny. The afternoon we all go to a park to take the last videos. Then we go home with the double bus and have dinner. Finally we have a videocall with a woman working in science and we go to bed !
